Between material and space

Häive explores the space between material and product. Rather than being defined by a single function, it adapts to different contexts—as a curtain, a lightweight room divider, or a flexible architectural element. Its character shifts with scale, light, and the surrounding space.

The structure combines translucent textile with narrow wooden veneer strips arranged in a rhythmic composition. Different veneer species offer subtle variations in colour, texture, and atmosphere, while the textile softly filters light. Together, the materials create a delicate balance between openness and privacy, light and shadow, structure and softness.

As a curtain, Häive can be seen as a contemporary interpretation of traditional vertical blinds—warmer, more tactile, and guided by the inherent qualities of natural materials. Rather than simply dividing a space, it provides a versatile system for shaping atmosphere, framing views, and creating subtle spatial boundaries.

The first prototype, crafted from oak veneer, takes the form of a “café curtain” and serves as the starting point for the project's ongoing development. A larger pine veneer installation will be presented at the Habitare Protos 2026 exhibition, continuing the exploration of scale, material, and new applications.
